This evening I read The Rime of the Ancient Mariner aloud to the jellyfish while Bubo dropped bits of brine shrimp into their tank. It lent a marvelous air to the usual feeding ritual, and while Bubo prefers T.S. Eliot, I was in the mood for some Coleridge. We are great lovers of poetry, Bubo and I, therefore we are not musophobists.

Musophobist is a noun meaning a person who dislikes or mistrusts poetry.

A.C. Swinburne wrote in 1880 “But, be it said with leave of our most illustrious Musophobist, they are equalled at their best if not excelled [etc.].”

Odd, isn’t it, that there should still be musophobists scampering about? I can’t imagine mistrusting poetry. Now, mistrusting a musophobist, that I can understand. Perhaps I can find that word in one my old dictionaries.

Unless you know the word for that. I’m sure you do. You’re rather clever.

Take the Jelly and Roll

In order to take full advantage of this gloriously cool summer evening, Bubo and I took our evening constitutional around Prospect Park. We took one of the jelly fish with us, in a contraption I’ve been tinkering with.

You can wear it on a scarf, even. Imagine this, but with a leash.

This works best on the grassy hills. I’m sure winter will be even easier, with everything covered in snow. Though the jelly fish may not be thrilled. Moon jellyfish prefer warmer temperatures. Perhaps I should work on a Jelly Coat next.

Morning Feeding Time

There is something so dream-like about feeding my moon jellyfish in the mornings. I have a cup of strong coffee in hand, and I like to play some jazz for them to get their mornings going. (Bubo, naturally, prefers lavender tea.)

Ideally, I could turn one of the smaller rooms into an enormous walk-in aquarium, allowing much more room for these fascinating and alien-esque creatures. I doubt the floors will support the weight of all that water, though.

Dare to dream. It’s not yet lunch and I have so many projects to embark upon.

It’s so hard to tear myself away from these beings. Meditative. Soothing. Perhaps I should offer viewing as therapy; a fifteen minute block of quiet contemplation whilst watching these creatures is more relaxing than anything I’ve ever experienced.

Admittedly, my ideas of relaxation and stress are slightly different than most folks’.

Jellyfish on Toast

I like to imagine that in a past life I might have been a jellyfish. In my mind, I would float serenely through the oceans, observing, learning…being.

Enjoy this beautiful slide show celebrating the complexity of these creatures.
